Battle of the Books

Brett participated for the second year in the Mattawan Battle of the Books. They had 12 books to read and Brett's team consisted of 6 players, Brett and another boy returned from last year's team. They had 2 third graders and 4 fourth graders comprising this team meaning no fifth graders. Patti again was the head coach for the team and did a wonderful job of organizing their meetings and taking control of the team and along with the other coach, preparing them for the battles.

The first round of battles was on February 9th and Brett's team was in a group with 10 other teams. Because of how young they were and only 2 people had done the BOB before, the expectations were not too high. However, they finished the day missing only one question out of twenty five; 141 points out of a possible 145! We were pleasantly amazed at how well the team did.

They moved onto the final round on February 16th where they and five other teams battled again. After the first two rounds, they were tied for second place and the scores were close at the top of the leader board. The questions in the third round were designed to separate the teams and they did; the questions were very specific and difficult. Unfortunately, Brett's team only got one out of the five questions correct and they ended up finishing in fourth place. While they were a bit bummed, we were still very proud of them and how well they performed in the battles over the two weeks.
